Jack Smith

Smith, of Metropolis, Ill., was one of NASCAR’s pioneers. He first raced in what is now considered the NASCAR Sprint Cup in 1949, beginning a career that would span 15 years.

Jack Smith was born in Illinois but grew up in Georgia.

He began racing against the local bootleggers on dirt tracks and asphalt superspeedways.  He made his debut in NASCAR's first race at the Charlotte Speedway.

Jack won 23 poles and finished with 21 wins and 142 top tens in his career. He is a member of the NMPA Hall of Fame.

He was voted NASCAR's Most Popular Driver in 1959.

Jack Smith was born May 14, 1924 and passed away on October 17, 2001 at the age of 78.
